Many members of the New Jersey
Tamil Arts and Cultural Society (NJTACS) have decided to create a fund
named “NJTACS Tamil Orphanage Fund”. We will continuously collect funds
for various organizations taking care of our Tamil children in Sri
Lanka.
Charity Projects
In the past, NJTACS members and
students participated in a fund raising event to help the 9/11 victims. NJTACS also raised funds for many orphanages and assisted hospitals in
Sri Lanka in procuring medical equipment.
Tsunami Relief Projects
NJTACS responded swiftly to the December 2004
Tsunami and created the “Sri Lanka Disaster Relief Fund”. A committee of
members was elected to raise funds and manage the effective use of it
not only to provide immediate relief but also to support long-term
rebuild of villages and towns destroyed by the Tsunami.
The short-term relief activities included:
- Addressing the situation with missionaries in Sri Lanka
to initiate support for fifteen orphans
- Procuring medicines and medical equipment to those
affected by the disaster
- Working with various organizations to provide medical equipment to hospitals
- Providing house-ware and other essential items to 300
families in the evacuation camps
- Assisting in a clothes drive to send over 15,000 pieces
of to the victims
In addition to the above
immediate response, NJTACS is considering various reconstruction
activities such as:
- Establishing a recurring support for up to 50 orphans
placed in a reliable orphanage under close supervision of NJTACS
- Participation in reconstruction of one or two villages
partnering with a corporation or a governmental organization
A
typical reconstruction of a village will include a hospital, library,
school, parks, play ground, sewage systems, shops, commercial area and housing units.
